Knees were sore at the end today. It took ages to find a camp site. It was interesting cycling around the city at night. A poor night’s sleep. Left reasonably early and climbed 15 kms on main road to Huesca. Started to rain near the top and heaved it down. Height 1280m above sea level. Put on waterproofs for 1st time. Had an orange and some biscuits each for breakfast.
Road narrowed as it passed a new tunnel. Roads were a bit slippery. Tunnel long and uphill. Very dark and not lights. Could see road when cars were in the tunnel but not otherwise. Pitch black. Quite scary. Dan was behind me and got off to walk. I pressed on until the end. Hot and sweaty on exit. Waited for Dan and took a picture of him as he came out.
Continued downhill for 20 kms along a very bendy road. Bike handling skills quite good now and they needed to be. The road surface had large lumps in it which were difficult to avoid. Spectacular views don into the valleys through winding gorges. Feeling of great excitement at speed and the sights. Loving it.
Came down onto the plains. It was cloudy until we reached Huesca, a modern industrial place. Blocks of flats everywhere. We bought lunch and quickly got back on the road to Zaragoza. Carried on a long, straight road with cars shooting past us. Flat open farmland all the way. Stopped at garages to buy cold drinks and water. I began to get tired. We reached Zaragoza camp site 2 hours after leaving Huesca.
